Delaware crowned new state chess champions November 29-December 1, following a three-day tournament at Delaware Park Raceway & Slots.

Phil Simpkins, Chief Tournament Director and president of the Delaware State Chess Association, says the annual event always pits Delaware's top players against each other.   The final round is always full of excitement with titles and places usually decided by the last game to finish.  "This year was no different," Mr. Simpkins said.  "FM David Gertler, winner of the 1982 U.S. Jr. Open Chess Championship, won his sixth Delaware Men's Title by drawing against six-time winner and defending Champion NM Charles Bouzoukis in the last round on Board #1 to clinch the Men's Title by 1/2 point over NM Charles Bouzoukis and Expert John Chernoff.  IM Ed Formanek (PA) along with Terence Coffee (MD). tied for first place money with FM Gertler.

In a history-making first for the tournament, the top finishing female player was recognized as the Delaware Women's Chess Champion.  "The U.S. Championship currently crowns a men's and women's champion and I didn't see any reason why we shouldn't be doing this as well," Mr. Simpkins said.  Colette Trouve', Delaware's highest rated female player and #50 nationally won the title by 1/2 point over her closest rival.

The tournament directed by Delaware State Chess Association president, Phillip Simpkins, Jr., Esq., with assistance from Newark Chess Club director Rick Lathem was held at beautiful Delaware Park. Trouvé described the site as one of the best she had ever played at. "Playing in the beautiful tiered hall at Delaware Park afforded us a panoramic view of the track where the stunning thoroughbreds were being trained and exercised each day. I found it truly inspiring to compete amid their championship grace and beauty," she said.
In other Championship events, Expert John Chernoff won the G/30 Championship with a perfect 4-0 score to win the Quick Title by a full point.  While Christopher Ruckman of Smyrna High School (11th Grade) won the Scholastic Championship with a perfect score of 5-0 by defeating Marc Longhenry (9th Grade) of Newark High School who finished with 3-1/2 points in the final round.
